Breastplate Size Guide
Breastplates are sized by the horse's chest and body, not the head. Measure around the widest point of the chest, just behind the front legs.
Size Chart
| Size | Horse Type | Chest Width | Chest Strap Length | Neck / Shoulder Strap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pony | Small to medium pony (up to 14hh) | 28–32 cm | 90–100 cm | 40–50 cm |
| Cob | Large pony / small horse (14–15.2hh) | 32–37 cm | 100–112 cm | 50–60 cm |
| Full | Standard horse (15.2–17hh) | 37–42 cm | 112–125 cm | 60–70 cm |
| XFull | Warmblood / large horse (17hh+) | 42–48 cm | 125–140 cm | 70–80 cm |
How to Measure
- Chest Width: Measure across the front of the chest between the two shoulder points. This determines the width of the chest strap.
- Chest Strap Length: Measure around the chest from one saddle D-ring, under the chest, to the opposite D-ring.
- Neck / Shoulder Strap: Measure from the saddle D-ring, up and over the shoulder, back to the saddle D-ring on the same side.
If your horse is between sizes, size up for a more comfortable fit. All Van-Jan breastplates have multiple adjustment holes on every strap.

Care & Conditioning
Clean leather with a soft damp cloth after use. Apply a quality leather conditioner every 4–6 weeks, or more frequently in wet or cold conditions. Do not use household soaps, detergents, or oil-based products. Store away from direct heat and sunlight. A well-maintained Van-Jans breastplate will last many years of regular use.
